Day 21 - At sea (30 November 2010)

"Dawn Princess will continue her passage South through the Indian Ocean leaving the west coast of Australia on her port side. At around 0600, we will pass 93 nautical miles to the east of the wreck of the HMAS Sydney. The "stormy Petrel" was commissioned into the Australian Navy in September 1935. Initially, she helped enforce sanctions during the Abyssinian crisis and performed convoy escort and patrol duties in Australian waters. Nicknamed the  "Grey gladiator" she returned to Australian waters in February 1941. On 19th November 1941, Sydney was involved in a mutually destructive engagement with the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran, and foundered with all 645 hands lost. It wasn't until the 17th March 2008 following a lengthy search that the wreck of the Sydney was discovered in 2,468 metres of water. The wreck along with that of the Kormoran were both placed under the protection of the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976."

Early this morning, a memorial service was conducted on deck 12 to honour HMAS Sydney.

Captain Todd McBain

I had a fantastic afternoon sharing Davor's birthday present to Barry. A day to remember!

I celebrated with a bottle of bubbly and the sunset on my balcony before to go to the Movie under the stars, watching the Morgan Freeman performance of Nelson Mandela in "Invictus". A bit a wind tonight, we are wrapped in blankets and the water is splashing out of both pools. Not as enjoyable then while sailing in the Northern Territories. We are back south and the weather is getting too cold for my liking. Last night out!
