Day 13 - Gulf of Carpentaria (22 November 2010)

"Throughout the day, the Dawn Princess has maintained a westerly course across the Gulf of Carpentaria towards Darwin. The first known European explorer to visit the region was the Dutch Willem Janszoon in his 1606 voyage. His fellow countryman, Jan Carstenszoon, visited in 1623 and named the gulf in homour of Pieter de Carpentier, at the time Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. The region was later explored and charted by Matthew Flinders in 1802 - 1803."

Balcony Grill - Deck 14

Balcony Grill

I had a late morning today and started with a kebab for breakfast at the Balcony Grill, following soon after with the Fruit flaming lunch buffet while watching the Allegria Cirque du Soleil on the outdoor screen over the pool. 30 degrees, sunshine , blue, blue and blue around us, finally!

Each day at 12 noon, a chime reminds us to double check all clocks on board display the same time, prior to an announcement from the bridge. Part of our information today was about the length of the chain for our anchor. And yes, after calculating how many meters of rope we needed for Taroona with my friend Chris Hancock, I had a smile on my face hearing today that the Dawn Princess anchor has a 360 meter long chain.

I unfortunately had to do some work in my cabin today, but had afternoon tea on my balcony. The cabin stewards have been collecting our passports for the Indonesian Immigration and the obtention of our visa prior to our arrival in Benoa. My Steward, Briccio Bandiola, has always a smile and looks after me very well. He came tonight to prepare my cabin for the night with a little card to remind us to turn back our clocks 30 minutes during the night. It is already the second time we change time zone since the start of our journey.

We were sailing into the sunset tonight. A beautiful full moon rose and was later illuminating the sea in the middle of a quiet night under the stars.
